here’s a part of the design in question that was being printed out.

1. i designed it in illustrator CS4. There is probably a way to do this in illustrator, but i’m not sure how, so for my purposes, i copy the design and then

2. Paste the design it into new photoshop file (RGB / 16 bit – THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. See results at the bottom.)

3. Add a layer of solid black above the design. (Set the lighting to “Overlay”)

4. Now you’re ready to print. These are the default settings that i found work best.

the protagonist (me) sets the stage for failure with a simple email.

we’re introduced to the antagonist (shawn) in his natural habitat.
a simple, non-threatening email, begins this corespondance well enough. No gross spelling errors. (only one by my count – which is easily enough explained in the appendix of the email )

The following discourse ensues.

It was at this point in the story, that i took pause to contemplate whether this transaction should in fact take place. – can someone who has access to a full keyboard (via blackberry) be trusted* when they don’t take the effort to fully type out the word “and” or use an ampersand or slash mark? or the word “you”?

*The answer to this is of course: “No. They can not be trusted.”

Against my better judgement, i called Shawn and we arranged an agreed time and place (to which he was 15 minutes late) and i bought the printer for $20, and we discussed other items that he had to sell. – the next day he sent me an email to follow up on these items.

i was not really interested in the mac, but i knew some friends who would be, so i was seriously entertaining the idea of buying both pieces.  some research had led me to believe that a Sprint MiFi device will not at all work with virgin mobile.

Well hello pushy salesman, how are you today. - i would like to point out that “nothing needed for virgin, just activate and buy time.” is a flat out lie.
The following the big confrontation where the protagonist calls out the villian on is lies.

So that was Sunday night. i still had not had a chance to set the printer up and test it yet.

Act 2: “Monday” or “Hey your crap doesn’t work”

This is me, glad that i didn’t buy the other stuff he was selling.

I for one was not expecting to hear back from him, so when i did receive this, i was completely surprised.

A phone call was place. This is the basic gist of it.

“It was working perfectly at his house, and it must have been during the transportation in my trunk that it got all messed up. – try to blow it out with some compressed air and if that doesn’t work, i’ll be more than happy to clean it for you.” said the liar

“Ok, Great” said jon jackson.

step 1: log into facebook if you aren’t already.

Step 2: go to: facebook.com/username

(You will see a page like the one below)

Step 3: Click "set a username" for your Pages.

Step 4: choose which page you want to set the username for:

If it is not eligible to choose a username, then you will see the message above.

How do you solve that problem? Get some more fans.

Step 5: If you see a box pop up that asks you to enter a username, do that, and the click "Check availability"

Ok, so you have a crappy powerpoint, or word document embedded on blog, because that web designer of yours insisted on you using wordpress for your website. He went on and on about "how easy it would be to work with it."

BUT now that you’ve got your document embedded,  somebody called you and said:

And you think to yourself "What in the world does that mean?"
and you send an email to your designer, and say:

what the deal is, is when you go to the page, where the document is embedded

and click the "print" button, it only wants to print the current page that you are viewing.

See? it even says so…

So, what you need to do, is one of two things,

1. click the download button, and save that sucker to your harddrive.

2.a – click the "<> Share" button

2.b – and then the "Click Here" under the: Read on Scribd heading.

2.c – Now, you can print to your hearts desire.

question: Why should i sign up for another service?
answer: Because you’re paying that designer for something… or if you’re not, maybe you should be.

question: how do i sign up if i received an invite.
answer: come with me, i’ll hold your hand. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Click on that “view the “WHATEVER THE NAME IS” folder that WHOEVER shared.

2.  you can see what type of files are in the folder and maybe that will help you determine whether you want to accept this folder or not.
A good rule of thumb is: if i sent it to you. THEN FREAKIN ACCEPT IT! I don’t do this because i don’t have better things to do.

3. Create a Free Dropbox Account.

OR if you’re already savy, then login to your dropbox account and accept it that way.

4. Here you have an option – i would recommend “download dropbox” but if you don’t want to, read below…

… So you’re a tool, and you don’t trust me? that’s ok. Maybe your network administrator won’t let you install stuff on your PC. that’s ok, i’ll hold your hand, just click on the “Dropbox website”

Then you’ll get a sweet looking interface like this:

5. Holy Crap! What’s that recent events tab?
Oh not much, that’s just where you can see what the heck i’ve been doing, and when i’ve been doing it.

(hey, see that little RSS icon… you wouldn’t even have to log in to see what’s going on… but who are we kidding, if you had to read this article, you probably think that “RSS” stands for “Robots Serve Satan”.)

6. Ok so there’s the files now what?
Really? Do i have to bottle-feed you?
Check the files you want to download, then click “More Actions” / “Download File”

defining and using custom patterns in Photoshop

I’m using Photoshop CS4, but this works with several versions as well.

step 1: Open whatever you want to use to make the pattern,

step 2: Copy and Paste that design into a new  document,
Black and white, or transparent backgrounds work the best.

step 3: Select “Edit / Define Pattern…”
go do it.

step 4: Name that Pattern
have you named it yet?

step 5: Open the image you want to create a pattern on.
i can’t hold your hand all the time…

step 6: Create a New Layer.
This isn’t how i would do it, but it will work for you noob.

step 7: Layer / Layer Style / Pattern Overlay.
The WRONG way to do it is select / Fill.

step 8: Click on the Pattern dohicky, then choose your new pattern you just made.
Now click “OK” – Did i really just have to type that?

step 9: TADA!…nothing happened…
Yeah i know that. you have to have something for the pattern to work with.

step 9a: Fill that Layer with White.
Yes, Use the paint bucket. tool…

step 9b: And magically…
it looks like crap… but wait, there’s more.

step 9c: Under the Layers Menu
click the arrow by the “normal” dropdown box. then try Multiply (to leave the dark colors of the design) or Lighten/Screen (to leave the white part of the design)

step 10: double click on the effects you put on your white layer.
if you can find it…. it’s under layers / layer effects.

step 11: If by some miracle you’re back to this window…
By jove, you’ve done it.

step 12: Now adjust the Scale / Blend Mode and Opacity to your heart’s content…
Congratulations, you can read. now go try a book.

step 13 Done Already?
